What filter replacement actually involves in Houston homes
Houston air handlers run long hours. Filters load faster here than the box suggests. A ceiling-grille return in a 1960s ranch pulls hard through one opening. Velocity at that single grille is high. Dust packs the pleats unevenly, usually near the center. We look at the loading pattern before anything else. It tells us where the leaks are.
Filter slots are often the problem, not the filter. Older setups have a bare rack at the air handler with gaps on three sides. Return-side leakage then pulls attic dust and loose fiberglass past the media. On duct board returns, the liner erodes and sheds fibers downstream of the filter entirely. Swapping media does nothing for that. Sealing the rack and the return boots does.
Thicker media is not automatically better. A high-resistance filter on a system already fighting sagged or kinked flex raises static pressure further. Far rooms starve. The coil ices. We check what the blower can tolerate before recommending anything denser.
Check yours by holding it toward light. If the pleats are gray and even, the schedule is working. Gray on one half only means air is bypassing the frame. Grit or insulation fiber on the clean side means something upstream opened up in the attic.

Call (713) 949-1410What happens after you call us
- 1
Call and tell us how many returns and supply vents you have, and we give you a two-hour arrival window with the tech's name. No charge for the visit, and no pressure to book anything on the phone.
- 2
We pull the attic hatch, check for sheet metal trunks or flex runs, count the registers, and look at the blower and coil. Then you get one firm number before a single vent cover comes off.
- 3
We clean every run, change the filter, test airflow at the farthest register, and vacuum up whatever came down with the hatch. You pay the number we quoted in the driveway, not a dollar more.
